There seems to be a curious trend among Spanish composers--they don't write very much music, but what they do write is very highly polished. Falla's El amor brujo began life as a dance piece with songs and dialogue, and a plot rather different from the one we have now. The orchestration was different too, this version being much fuller. The most famous number is the "Ritual Fire Dance," and this and many other tunes became the source for one of Miles Davis's best albums, Sketches of Spain. You'll probably recognize many of the tunes; this well-assorted disc offers authentically fiery performances and outstanding sound. --David Hurwitz
