Oud player Munir Bashir is renowned in the Arab world for his work within the tradition of the Persian taqsim, and his virtuosity on his instrument is possibly unmatched today. But his worldwide fame is a credit to his expansive knowledge of other music from around the world, and an adventurous spirit that is perhaps the most important aspect of a great master of an improvisational music that is nonetheless tied to a strict musical system (maqam).
