CD Reviews

A Monumental Disappointment
05/09/2001
(1 out of 5 stars)

"If you're a Mulberry Lane fan who likes adult contemporary pop music with intelligent, sensitive lyrics and stunning vocal harmonies, this disc is sure to disappoint you. The four sisters who make up Mulberry Lane have forsaken their previous sound for a "dancier" sound that, to my ears, is almost indistinguishable from a dozen other girl groups of far lesser talent. The thoughtful lyrics are gone, replaced by words that seem targeted at the 12-and-under set, and the vocal harmonies that made the group's first two CDs so memorable are nearly buried in the dance mixes. That four musicians with this much creativity and vocal ability would waste their talents on me-too music is a sad thing to hear.Mulberry Lane's philosophy, which used to be prominently displayed on their Web site, was, "To be nobody but yourself in a world where everyone is trying their hardest to make you everyone else is the hardest battle you'll ever fight." This CD makes me wonder whether they've given up on this philosophy and sold out to their handlers at MCA. If not, I hope that they rethink this change in direction and use their talent to create music that really matters for their next release. It doesn't have to be AC -- or fit any genre label, for that matter -- as long as it's unique and good. The "Yo-Yo" single is neither."
Good suggestion from a friend

"My buddy told me about this disc and I was happy that I bought it. Play it in my car all the time and it sounds great on my surround sound stereo system too. Can't decide which song I like better. I recommend it to anyone. Especially those that like female harmonies over groovy beats."
2 great tunes, 4 great singers

"MMmmm, Hmmm this stuff good. The harmonies of wilson phillips with the added soulfulness of the supremes. Lyrics have a bite to them. You can listen to this stuff over and over again and still hear something new."
