CD Reviews

One of the better recordings you can get for sound and/or pe
John Grabowski | USA | 10/26/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"These are some of the best-sounding Mozart piano concerti I've ever heard--perfectly-balanced and natural-sounding. MDG does its usual excellent job--is there a company out there making better-sounding recordings today? I doubt it. The only slight downside is I would like a little more personality from Zacharias, which perhaps strives sometimes to be too genial. The slow movement of K. 453 doesn't plumb the depths like it perhaps could--for that you have to get my favorite recording--Pires/Abbado live on DG. But these are very fine recordings, with particularly clear and beautifully-textured accompaniments by the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. (I have heard them in performance, and this is very much what they sound like.) While this is not HIP pure they have benefitted from some of the clarity the movement has introduced. I would perhaps like a slightly dryer sound at times, and a bit more distance from the mike, but that's a personal presence and won't bother most other people. Just check out the sound samples provided to hear how well-recorded and well-played these pieces are. Recommended, even if you already have many other performances of these works on your shelf."
