CD Reviews

Surprise surprise

"My CD was labeled "Classiques d'Or," no performer or orchestra named. I paid 99 cents. The first half second of No. 9 was cut off, so that was the end of No. 9. But even then I noticed that No. 17 was well played, the piano well microphoned, a very acceptable recording. And to this day this performance is the only one I can plunk into my CD player and listen to without making significant equalizer adjustments to compensate for weaknesses in the recording, the orchestra or the soloist. A small miracle. And on my new Definitive Technology speakers, it sounds even better. Perahia, Uchida, Ashkenazy, Schiff, Brendel, Serkin, I could go on -- none of them play No. 17 this well."

"The great thing about super budget classical CDs ($5.00 or less) is that you really cannot go wrong. You might get a bad CD but you can only lose $5.00. This CD costs less than 4 dollars but is worth lots more. The performances are simply wonderful. The performers play the music like it was written for them. The music comes out naturally with great flow and lots of passion. The Mozart 9th Piano Concerto was his first true masterpiece in the genre. Each movement is just about 10 minutes long giving the work great balance. No. 17 is also a masterpiece with an especially wonderful finale. If you can forego one value meal at your nearest McDonalds's, buy this CD. You should love it.
