CD Reviews

This is a WONDERFUL CD!!
Spike | Streamwood, IL USA | 02/13/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I bought this at my local christian book store. One look at the cover, and i thought the store accidently bought the wrong album. But when you really listen to the lyrics, you hear the message they are trying to get to you. Most of the songs have a metallica-esque sound to them. The best songs on the CD are probobly "Three of a Kind", which you will understand if you know the christian faith; and "New York Skies", which tells the story of 9/11. The first lines are "Human missiles attacking new york skies, evil forces give command to die." I HIGHLY recommend this CD if you want something to head-bang to. I bought this for two reasons:
1) the Music is amazing(Lots of bass!)
2) It does a mindtrip on my mom who likes the "traditional" christian music. F.Y.I.: This album is not just for christians, but for anyone who likes bands like P.O.D. and Creed."
This band has satan's knees shaking

"here is a good way to expel evil spirits from your living quarters. acquire this cd by mortification, play it, and instantly, the demons will flee, despite the fact that its death metal. mortification sounded a bit slow on one song "sorrow" and kicked rear end the rest of the time. when you open it up and look at the band members, they acquired a fourth player, but liner notes indicate that they will soldier on as a 3 piece. 3 piece band or not, they make satan's knees shake violently."
Mortification - rocking harder than previous 2 releases

"I have been a big fan of Mortification since 1992. They have changed their sound throughout the years. I respect them for implementing different styles into their music. The older releases are very hard, which I enjoy very much. Their recent releases are a little mellower, yet still rock hard. Relentless is the Mortification release which sees Steve Rowe and company rock a little harder than their previous releases The Silver Cord is Severed and Hammer of God. I was excited at the prospect of Mortification having four members, that is until I found out that one of the guitarists (Jeff Lewis) was unable to continue to be part of the band. It's too bad because I believe he added some very good songwriting to complement Steve Rowe's writing. At any rate, this is a very good release by Steve Rowe and company. The musicianship is solid all around; Steve's thumping base playing always excellent, Adam's great drumming style adding to the music, solid rhythm guitar work from Mick, and better lead work from Jeff. This being his one and only album, his leads are an improvement over the last guitarist, Lincoln Bowen. I loved Lincoln, but Jeff just does a better job in my opinion. The music styles goes all over the place, from the slightly death metal-ish Apocalyptic Terror to the doom-sounding Sorrow. Here's a breakdown of each track:

1)Intro (3/10) - It's nothing special - just building momentum to the next track.

2)Web of Fire (9/10) - This song rocks! Great double beat drumming and a solid riff.

3)Heart Shape Void (8/10) - Just a solid track with a great message, good lead work.

4)Priests of the Underground (7/10) - It would be a better song if the verse section wasn't so repetitive with it's beat. Other parts are solid.

5)Bring release (8/10) - Good track; starts slow and speeds up in different parts. Good guitar work.

6)Syncretize (9/10) - A mid paced track with great lead work; well written an played.

7)The Other Side of the Coin (2/10) - Not a great track at all. The skip button is the best feature for this song.

8)Altar Song (5/10) - Not too memorable for me.

9)Sorrow (9/10) - Very cool song, kind of like a slow dirge. Good stuff.

10)3 of a Kind (6/10) - Ok song, good thumping bass track.

11)Arm the Annointed (7/10) - Good lyrics with solid music.

12)New York Skies (8/10) - Holds more meaning, having lived near NYC during 9/11 attacks.

13)Apocalyptic Terror (10/10) - This track is the hardest by far. More growling vocals on this one than others. Just a great heavy song, with great musicianship all around.

Mortification will always be one of my favorite bands - always changing it up. This album was a good precursor to the following albums as they starting veering to the heavier and faster songs. Really 3.5 stars for this album, but I round up to 4. Long live Mortification!!"
