A Singer's Singer
MICHAEL ACUNA | Southern California United States | 11/29/2003

"Most people know of Morgana King through her appearances, in almost dialogue-less performances in the Godfather movies, as Mrs. Vito Corleone. But some of us know of her as a peerless singer whose vocal and emotional range is without equal.
"A Taste of Honey" dates from the early 1960's and is a collector's item now. This set, with gorgeous arrangements by Torrie Zito, is breathtaking in its daring dynamic range: listen to King sing the hell out of Bobby Scott's A Taste of Honey, for example. I have not heard a version of this song as achingly heartfelt as this, even though Esther Ofarim's version (arranged by Mr Scott himself) comes close.
Morgana King is Unique and I've not heard anyone else with quite the same voice quality and her committment to the sound and the lyrics of a song.
By the way, she is very much still with us and I usually catch her once a year at the Cinegrill in Hollywood: resplendent with the unmistakable aura of someone who has seen it all, known them all, survived it all and has come out of the other side with her talent undiminished by time or styles."
Taste of Honey - Morgana King

"It is a shame that Morgana King's recordings are not more readily available. Ms.King has an incredible range and does things with her voice that most singers can only dream of. Her take on "Lazy Afternoon" is about as seductive as it gets. Originally released in the 1960s, the arrangements are lush and might seem to some a bit dated, but for the most part all of her renditions still stand up. Her vocal facility pulls you in, and you just want more. If you can find it, regardless of the medium - vinyl, tape or CD, get it. You won't be disappointed."
Rare -- get it if you can

"I am lucky enough to already have this, bought it at a bargain price several years ago. The unbelievable range of her voice -- multi-octave -- and the richness of her quiet passion make "A Taste of Honey" (both the individual song and the CD) one of the most haunting experiences in music. I saw her in person a few years ago and this was the song everyone waited for. "Try to Remember" is a close second as a song that sticks with you long after the CD has ended. Morgana King is not for everyone -- I'm not much of a jazz fan but she is in a category of her own. I personally prefer her soulful songs to her upbeat rhythms but I'll take any of her songs, any day."
