"I've just discovered this older release of the whole kaboodle, the eight books of madrigals published by Claudio Monteverdi (1563-1643) and recorded by Anthony Rooley's pioneer ensemble The Consort of Musicke, featuring such sublime singers as Emma Kirkby, Evelyn Tubb, Paul Agnew, Andrew King, Allan Parkes, and David Thomas, most of them in the flush of vocal youth. I don't have the box set, so I can't compare recording quality to the originals or to the re-releases. Regarding the latter, especially those on Virgin Veritas, I have a major gripe - the absence of texts in the original poetic Italian and/or in translations. Madrigals are all about words, all about expressing the emotions of the texts. My Italian is good, but I can't follow 16th C verse - Torquato Tasso and his peers - merely by ear. If someone knows whether the texts are included in this box set, please inform people through a comment.
OOOPS! This collection doesn't include all eight books! In fact, books 4, 5, and 7 are not included. See the comments below.
I've reviewed several of the Rooley CDs of Monteverdi madrigals previously, always with highest praise for the musicianship and the interpretation."
