CD Reviews

Even better than "Trampolim"
Hugo | Barcelona, Spain | 11/18/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I liked very much her previous album "Trampolim", but this one surpasses it in many ways. Her elegant voice seems to be getting richer, with more nuances, and also smoother, lighter. The repertoire is a tasteful mix of Brazilian oldies and new songs, comprising many different styles but in a very consistent way. In the beautiful ballads "Canto em cualquer canto", a Ná Ozetti's composition, or "Ave Maria no Morro", a Dalva de Oliveira classic, you can notice how expressive her voice can be. She also sings very gracefully several Brazilian rhythms in songs as "Dançapé", "Canário do reino", "Minha palhoça" or "Ilú-ayê". The arrangements aren't as sophisticated as in Trampolim: they're more restrained and maybe more traditional, but also very, very nice and creative. Some of the songs are accompanied by an accoustic guitar and an accordion in North-Eastern Brazil style, others just by piano, others have lively percussion... and there's Mônica's vocals floating in the air. Overall this album is a class act and a must-have for every lover of Brazilian music with roots. I think lovers of new age may like it a lot too, since it is very relaxing."
