Synopsis

Rae and Christian's smooth, ultracool handle on hip-hop puts them in a superior orbit to that of many U.S. peers, underscoring how rich U.K. hip-hop can be. Mark and Steve switch it up between blissful dreamy (Beanfield's "Planetary Deadlock"), rich and creamy (Face & Feline's "For Claudia") and old-school, blunt rhyme (Porn Theatre Ushers' "Me & Him" with Aim). The constant class throughout comes from a soul-driven heartbeat, which isn't always obvious, yet gives this Rewind its longevity. This music's warm to the ear, danceable, and unmistakably hip; you'd be hopping mad to avoid it. --Steffan Chirazi

CD Reviews

Classic beats... Rae and Christian deliver once again

(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you've heard Rae and Christian's contribution to the "Another Late Night" series, you know what an amazing knack this British DJ pair have for assembling faultless, groove-laden, chilled out sets. On "Mixer Presents: Rewind", they deliver another impeccable collection of tracks from a wide range of artists and styles into a consistent and coherent collage of hip beats, groovy drum beats, and amazing vocal performances. Anyone with even a passing interest in this type of music should definitely check this disc out--it's guaranteed to impress. For the best sampling try "Play On" featuring Jungle Brothers, "S & M on the Rocks" with Swollen Members, or (a definite highlight) "Just Passing Through" with Aim, which features the album's most amazing and infectious vocal performance. These are only a few of the record's greatest moments. The entire set is refreshingly consistent, with barely a dull moment in its over 60 minutes. Dig it."
