CD Reviews

Hot collection for fans of dance mix compilations
Daniel W. Kelly | Long Island, NY United States | 05/06/2005

"I don't think it's worth concerning one's self with whether or not these songs are used on the show. This is a great dance compilation for fans of Circuit Party, Masterbeat, Global Groove and Party Groove series. Personally I find disc 2, mixed by Abel, to be the stronger of the two. On disc 1, Chris Cox not only goes for obvious and overplayed tracks, but use of new wave classics does not really work. Particularly since he starts with Book of Love then moves into the recent Oscar G remix of Ultra Nate, then jumps BACK to new wave with Bronski Beat. Realistically, he should have begun with bronski beat and its awesome slow intro, then segued from there into Book of Love, and from THAT point, bring us up to the modern day stuff. But he did end with a bang, using one of the better remixes of his buddy Barry Harris's "Dive in the Pool," a Queer As Folk classic. Disc 2, on the other hand, is all pumping club music of right now. Only other issue is that both discs run under a full hour. They should have allowed longer lengths for each song and filled up a whole CD (Abel gives us lengthier versions on disc 2, but they still aren't full length tracks). Track times are:

CD1

1. boy (3:16)

2. free (4:48)

3. smalltown boy (4:55)

DJ Set but also a true soundtrack

"I'm not sure why some people are complaining, but I recognized every song on both CDs as being used to some degree on QUEER AS FOLK (especially the Kristine W tracks and "Spin Spin Sugar"). Now these mixes are different from what you may have heard in the show, and yes songs are mixed as a continuous DJ set with no breaks between songs - just like a club, and hence the title CLUB BABYLON. It's what I expected, and reminds me of the second season's soundtrack format. All that being said, it's a good collection of strong dance songs from all the seasons. The mixes are solid, they all flow nicely, and there are no instrumental tracks... so it's very dramatic and oriented around vocals. Definitely worth it if you're a fan of club music."
