CD Reviews

You have stumbled upon a gem
Robert J. Morris | Macungie, PA USA | 02/13/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I came upon this album in 1991 while thumbing through the discount bin at a Sam Goode store in Philadelphia; I remembered Mathieu's name and voice from a series of TV appearances she'd made in England in the late `60s. Unhappy that she would be singing in Spanish, not her native French, I bought the CD anyhow.A dozen years later there is no hour of music I enjoy more, certainly the best impulse buy of my life. She puts her powerful voice to a couple of classics in the album, including Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", and she does a terrific job on Piaf's signature "L'hymne a l'amour". But the very best of this album is in the songs that, to an American at least, belong to no one else.In "Mi Confesion" her voice is soft, honest, persuasive as she confesses her love - give in fella, you haven't got a chance. With the very next song, "Por Tu Amor", she is strong, confident, demanding that you trust her because she loves you. Whatever you say, Mireille. Rather than go on and on, I'll just say that this album, sung in Spanish, contains that depth of musical feeling that is so uniquely French.I now own several Mireille Mathieu albums, and I enjoy them all. But Embrujo is absolutely her best. Just like me in 1991, you have stumbled upon a real gem."
