Synopsis

The Chicago-born vocalist Miki Howard burst on the scene in 1987 and showed a lot of promise with her hits "Come Share My Love," and "Love Under New Management." She even had the chops to play Billie Holiday in the movie Malcolm X. This radio-friendly release is Howard's first record since her 2001 CD, Three Wishes. Co-produced by smooth jazz saxophonist Kim Waters and Chris "Big Dog" Davis, Howard's Aretha Franklin/Mavis Staples-influenced vocals update ten '70s R&B Quiet Storm classics, from the Tina Turner-inspired Ann Pebbles hit "I Can't Stand the Rain" and The Captain and Tennille's "Do That To Me One More Time" to Natalie Cole's "Inseparable" and Marlena Shaw's "Go Away Little Boy." All told, Howard's husky contralto still coos and grooves, as evidenced by the title track originally made by Sylvia Robinson, and Boz Scaggs's Blue-eyed soul classic, "Lowdown." Miki -- Welcome back...again!
Patrick M. Hnidka | Munhall, PA | 09/20/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Not sure what Miki's personal situation is, because in recent years, Miki would release an album and then disappear for years at a time -- most recently taking 5 years between her last, lackluster Peak album, "Three Wishes" and this one. However, this more than makes up for the wait! Miki is in fine voice, and the song selections are stellar. There are several surprises, including soulful, sultry readings of the Captain & Tennille's "Do That To Me One More Time", Boz Scaggs' "Lowdown", and the title tune. However, out of the 10 songs, there isn't a bad song in the bunch. The only complaint I have is that there could have been a few more songs included. But that's a minor quibble, and hopefully there will be a Volume 2 without having to wait another 5 years!"

"I'VE NOTICED THEY ONLY HAVE 10 SONGS ON MOST OF THE RELESED CDs.THIS IS ANNOYING AND STINKS FROM THIS RECORD LABEL, THEY NEED TO INCLUDE MORE TRACKS ON THEIR CDs .THIS CD IS LISTENABLE, BEST TRACKS ARE LOWDOWN AND PILLOW TALK, THERE IS A LOT OF SYNTHESIZED MUSIC IN THE BACKROUND OF OTHER TRACKS,MAKING IT SOUND LIKE KAROKE. THE SAME IS ALSO NOTED ON THE NEW GLEN JONES CD."
BRILLIANT & DEEPLY SOULFUL VOCALS~BRAVO MIKI !!!

"Miki Howard is a rare artist and captured in this tremendous set at the peak of her amazing vocal magnificence and deeply passionate skilled way of emoting like nobody else around...every song is taken to a new dimension and will give complete pleasure to anyone who enjoys a great voice!!! For anyone who has enjoyed these classics over the years, do not miss this stunning and beautifully arranged collection of classics...Miki is riveting and does each standard as they have never been done before and you will fall in love with each one of these classics all over again and with the incredibly talented Miki Howard who is THE voice of her generation!!! Bravo Miki and thank you for this wondrous musical treat...it is the finest and "Which Way Is Up" being the wild funky jam that it is should be released as a single and should go all the way to the top and hopefully Miki will win a much deserved "Grammy Award" this time!!!"
