Synopsis

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
All the promise of Mike Scott's former band, the Waterboys, is realized on his second solo release. With an open heart and an electric guitar, Scott creates his most personal and impassioned album to date. A disc that displays a complete lack of irony, Still Burning paints him as a natural mystic and spiritual seeker who worships rock & roll. Like fellow traveler Bob Dylan, Scott lords over a full-on rock sound with a timeless quality that proves that after all these years the fire's still burning. --Kevin Cole

Passionate and creative

"This and the subsequent Rock in the Weary Land are rock and roll albums that complement each other well. Still Burning incorporates fewer influences, but is no less interesting or compelling. These are rock guitar songs, and not the new wave influenced Waterboys music, which I also like. Scott explores refreshingly new ground, and maintains a strongly spiritual aspect throughout. Some songs are more serious than others, but all are meant to rouse the listener, to get your attention and say something to you, about relationships, about the meaning of life, about having fun, about identity, and other topics. One of my favorite rock albums of all time."
Typical Good Mike Scott: some gems and some duds

"The skin shiveringly beautiful "Love Anyway" is worth the price of the CD. Also good is "Sunrising" (the "Still Burning" title track). "Everlasting Arms" is beautiful too, I just wish it wasn't about God :-) As I write this, I'm listening to Scott's "The Whole of the Moon", on the "This is the Sea" album --- perhaps the finest song ever written in the english language. I may be exaggerating there, but not by much. There's nothing _that_ good on "Still Burning", but "Love Anyway" gets about three fourths of the way there."
Very good record but a just a tiny bit same old stuff...

"My only gripe about this record is that it could have been super-great, instead it is just very good. Perhaps I got a little overfed by singers-songwriters music with rock undercurrents... who knows. Anyway, this album, taken separately is probably of the same strength as "Bring'em All In" so I might be just not feeling too well but then again maybe I onto something. "Questions" and "Rare Precious And Gone" are the highlights but a few others are really good numbers like "Everlasting Arms", "Sunrising' and "Love Anyway". Also worth every penny!"
