CD Reviews

Early 70s Britpop
Pieter | Johannesburg | 10/03/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"The catchy novelty song Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep was a hit for a certain Lally Stott the year before, but it took Middle Midle of the Road to take it to UK number one in the summer of 1971. In the USA the version by Mac & Katie Kissoon became the hit. Middle of the Road were a Scottish band and very successful in continental Europe too.

This fun collection of early 1970s bubblegum pop also contains their other hits Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum (UK number 2), Samson & Delilah, Sacramento and Soley Soley. There's a tremulous quality in the vocals of Sally Carr in the pop songs like Chirpy and Tweedle Dee that is lacking in the slower songs like Soley Soley.

As 70s pop music goes, this isn't bad at all. The music's nothing cerebral, but the aforementioned catchy songs still entertain; there are interesting dance remixes of the two biggest hits. The rest of the tracks are middling at best; most of them weren't released as singles and they weren't hits. Those who are prone to nostalgia will enjoy the album as a pleasant time transporter back to childhood.
