Whoa, what happened here? Is this the same Michelle Tumes honored with an ASCAP award for Christian Songwriter of the Year for her brilliant debut, Listen? With Dream, Tumes has done a doughnut in the sands of musical style. It's a clear step into a dance-pop-infused world in which Tumes trades depth and mood for fun and frolic. Her angelic voice still shimmers on tracks like the title cut, "Love Shines Through," and "Blessings Flow." But what we miss the most here is Tumes's ability to mingle musical backgrounds into a unique and notable soundscape, so well captured in her first two releases. Somewhere along that road, Tumes spun out into a ditch full of lightweights. Her fans will probably find enough here to like, but it will be hard to draw newcomers to a Dream we've all heard too often elsewhere. --Michael Lyttle

A Dream Come True
Michael Janke | San Diego, CA | 09/30/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Michelle Tumes' latest album, DREAM, is a stunning collection of songs that meld her world music roots with some new euro-pop stylings. However, though DREAM will get a lot of attention for its new pop sounds, Tumes really didn't stray too far from what made her so successful on LISTEN, as the majority of the album is still highly reminiscent musically to that project. There are three songs that stand out as truly different, incorporating euro-pop beats and programming in a very Savage Garden-eque way. "Dream," which opens the album with a bang, "One and Only," and "King of My Heart." Don't be fooled: this is not teen pop and even on the upbeat tracks there remains an underlying firm foundation of superb production and sweeping string arrangements (done by Tumes, herself). As usual, the best parts of the album are Michelle's lyrics and her voice. Ethereal and airy as always, Tumes shines, in her otherworldly way, in particular on softer moments like "Image Of" and "God Of My Hope." Lyrically, her songs have never been stronger, and retain all of the poetic imagery and tenderness that reminds me so much of great writers like Cindy Morgan.Overall, DREAM is a real gem. Genre-wise, it is more of a pop album with world influences, rather than a world music album with pop influences. But her old fans should quickly embrace her musical growth, since she didn't stray too far, and DREAM should kick the door wide open for new fans who are looking for beautiful, mature pop music. It is my favorite album of the year. FOUR 1/2 STARS."
Not my favorite...worth a listen just for shock value!

"I must agree with others here that have said that for a pop CD, it's not a bad effort. But fans of Listen and Center of my Universe, if they're anything like me, will not like this newest effort by Michelle Tumes. I can only hope she returns to her roots with her 4th release. Some have written they she will sell more CD's moving over to pop....but if you look at the standing of this CD at Amazon compared to her first two, the sales numbers are much, much, lower......so please Michelle go back to your former style....it's so much more powerful!"
Lightning strikes twice, but not three times

"I know I'm not the only one slightly disapointed in the shift that Michelle has taken. Buying this CD I expected the beautiful, soulfull songs that are on her first two CDs. I was not expecting Enya meets Britney Spears. There are some real gems on this album (which is why I still gave it 4 stars) but I miss songs like Chant and Christe Eleison. Advice for Michelle: you're better than this!"
