Album Description

Michael McGinnis' new release on RKM is a paean to being in the moment. His decision to give voice to those elements that are influencing his world right now, whether it be a trip to Ireland or producing a recording for a singer/songwriter, are all heard on Tangents. The music is a reflection of his interests, his influences and his amazing synthesis of these disparate sounds into a cohesive and beautiful whole. Michael writes music specific to the players with an approach akin to chamber music that incorporates improvisation and allows each player to contribute to the outcome of the composition. Rarely has a record been so aptly named and rarely has a collection of tangents formed such a seamless and complete musical statement.

"Mike McGinnis is undoubtedly one of the best young musicians in New York City right now. Representing the younger generation which refuses to be boxed into one particular style, McGinnis moves easily between structure and open improvisation, and leads his band through complex changes without ever losing soul. The album "Tangent" contains different elements and is sure to satisfy every listener. Some tunes are humorous, some swing hard, some are just plain beautiful. These different characteristic are made coherent by great composition, the band's unique sound and superb improvisation. A very happening band with a very happening album."

"Finally, a jazz album that isn't filled with a rehashing of other people's music. McGinnis has an original voice as a composer and as a saxophonist. Just when I thought I knew what was coming next the music went off on a tangent and took me someplace new! I would definitely recommend this recording to anyone who likes a wide variety of music."
