Synopsis

Album Description
Michael Gould2 is a performing duo comprised of Western and non-Western percussion instruments and shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute). The duo performs traditional Japanese music as well as original compositions. Michael Gould, an Assistant Professor of Music met Michael Gould, master of shakuhachi quite by accident. Upon arrival at the University of Michigan, School of Music to teach percussion in 1998, Michael Gould became entwined in a series of mistaken identity through a long series of e-mail messages, phone calls and contracts to perform shakuhachi intended for the other Michael Gould. Some months later, the two Gould?s met and realized that there was much more in common with each other than just their namesake?s. Both lived in Japan for long periods of time and are musicians with a passion for Japanese music. From their first meeting an incredible friendship was forged and the beginning of a common musical path. The compositions that are included in this CD have all started as images. Most of these images were taken from our collective experiences in Japan. As we began to perform together, the subjective nature of these images became much more refined into an objective, refined body of work.

Be transported with "Tradition and Beyond"

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Michael Gould duo has put together an interesting album that combines a master shakuhachi performer with a master percussionist. Each selection on this album creatively captures a different essence of the human experience: contentment, confusion, nervousness, calm, intrigue, beauty, rage, fear, clarity. As each piece begins the listener's mood is immediately transported to a specific realm of the aforementioned human experiences. Improvisation and spontaneous interaction give each piece an open-ended unbounded quality that seems fitting for a combination of these instruments. The first four songs have a more traditional sound to them as they portray a life struggle of a farmer forced to move to the big city. Selections 5-8 sound more experimental in concept. Selection six, "Mushi Ondo (Insect Rhythm)" is an interesting percussion solo capturing the conversation of the nightime creatures. Selection eight is a beautiful shakuhachi solo that mirrors the call of birds. They even add live electronics and a child's voice to create the eerie "a distOrted dreAm...". The last four songs are strong sonic metaphors of air, earth, sea, ending with a sonic creation of fire.In a nutshell, this album is beautiful, spontaneous and intriguing. Great performances by both musicians."
