Michael Feldman is host of Public Radio International's "Whad' Ya Know?" as well as author of the hilarious and historically dead-on liner notes to this disc. He claims to have had one semester of music appreciation in the seventh grade, but that must have been just the beginning. On the Serenata Notturna here he says, "Two hundred years from now it will knock off whatever people are wearing for socks." And later he points out that Mozart's was the time when "Kings, princelings, archdukes and archbishops, lacking record collections, kept stacks of musicians for mood music." The Mozart selections here cover a variety of genres: symphony, chamber music, and opera. The performances by various artists are quite decent. --Gwendolyn Freed
