Synopsis

Album Description
This eclectic debut album has songs influenced by Latin, Indian, Asian and Classical music. A gutsy and risk taking performance Searching is a musical adventure for the Jazz enthusiast. Of the nine songs on the album, seven are original tunes. These songs are as eclectic as the band. The title song "Searching" has Latin roots with the three percussionists setting the groove. The beauty of "Nikita" offsets the aggressive nature of "Malcontent". Drawing from the many cultures of the San Francisco Bay area, "Goddess" uses tabla and tanpura to give the song an Indian flavor and "Coalescing" has Asian and classical hints. "The Source" is a solid modern jazz tune with an interesting bass groove. The group displays their avant-garde roots on jazz standards "Footprints" and "Lonely Woman" as they perform them with high energy and emotion. While Searching is Michael's quest for his voice in Jazz, it is also a musical adventure for all that listen.

CD Reviews

Innovative and emotional jazz!
Christian Carlson (cncarlson@mindsp | 09/16/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Searching is a great album. It is not glossy or slick. It is jazz played with emotion from the soul. It made me feel as though I was sitting in a jazz club in the by-gone days, listening to musicians tell their stories of love, sorrow and joy through music. This group reaches the inner soul of us all!"
Cooke Quartet, bringing it back

"The Cooke Quartet is a bringing back the old school flavor missing from todays Jazz scene. Michael Cooke is an amazing sax player, who has put together an equally amazing group. This CD will blow your mind, a must for all Jazz lovers!"
Excellent Old-School Jazz

"The Cooke Quartet is a new band out of the Bay Area that pays tribute to the Old School Jazz sounds of Coltrane, Miles, Monk, etc. The combination of standards and orginals give hope to the current Jazz scene. If you are looking for some "new" music to put beside your "Live at Birdland" CD, this is it."
