CD Reviews

A Small Big Band
Paul Oberlin | Yuma, AZ USA | 09/27/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For this recording, Mel has Kenny Werner on Piano, Dennis Irwin on Bass, Gary Smulyan on Baritine Sax, Dick Oatts on Alto and Tenor Sax, John Mosca on Trombone, and Jim Powell on Flugelhorn. The horns provide plenty of variety and sonic texture to this straigh-ahead jazz date. My favorite track is No. 4, Native American. Towards the middle, the music fades to a brilliant Piano interlude by Werner, then resumes again. If you like Horns, you'll love this CD all of the solos are excellent. Finally, the sound quality is outstanding. Recorded direct to DAT in 1989, this is one of the best sounding CDs in my collection. The imaging and depth are superb, you can pinpoint each musician's exact location on the soundstage."
