Splendid songs from one of the best sister acts ever
Matthew G. Sherwin | last seen screaming at Amazon customer service | 05/18/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The McGuire Sisters were one of the most successful sister acts of the entire twentieth century and maybe even ever; they invariably performed quite well and they had a huge following of loyal fans. This fine "twofer" CD has all the songs from two record albums by The McGuire Sisters entitled While The Lights Are Low and Do You Remember When? It's really nice to have these two hard to find albums both on one CD. In addition, the quality of the sound on this CD is excellent; and the artwork incorporates the artwork from the original record album releases.

The CD begins with The McGuire Sisters singing their hearts out on "Do You Remember When?" This number has a great melody and these sisters harmonize so very well. I really like "Do You Remember When;" the tune is infectiously catchy and everyone likes nostalgia. "Sometimes I'm Happy" is another number that sparkles when The McGuire Sisters sing it out; and that's grand. The music makes good use of the percussion and the strings, too. "All By Myself" sounds fresh and new every time I hear it--these ladies deliver this all THAT well. The brass enhances the musical arrangement and these three ladies make "All By Myself" a good tune. In addition, "Them There Eyes" gets the royal treatment from The McGuire Sisters; this has a somewhat big band sounding musical arrangement and it all holds its own very well.

"Cuddle Up A Little Closer, Lovey Mine" is quite pretty; The McGuire Sisters deliver this very sweetly and I'm sure you'll like this tune. The strings work wonders for this ballad, too. "Somebody Loves Me" showcases the sisters squarely front and center; and that's quite all right by me! They handle tempo and key changes like the pros they always were and still remain. Even "'S Wonderful" sounds new when I hear The McGuire Sisters sing it with style--terrific! "Blue Skies" has a faster tempo than I'm used to hearing but it works very well; and "I'm In The Mood For Love" is perfect for slow dancing all alone with your sweetheart in your living room late at night.

"My Darling, My Darling" sounds easy on the ear; the lush arrangement enhances the ballad all the more. Listen also for "Tenderly;" "Tenderly" features The McGuire Sisters at their best and it's a major highlight of this CD. "Tenderly" was always one of my very favorite love songs; and these talented songbirds do an incredible job with it. "Wonderful One" has more perfect harmonizing by The McGuire Sisters; and there's another gem in "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)." The strings are used to great advantage on "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)" and this ballad lacks nothing--it's absolutely gorgeous.

"Our Love Is Here To Stay" is quite the masterpiece in the capable hands of these wonderful angels; this is one of the very best renditions of this number I've ever heard. The CD finishes strong with a splendid interpretation of "Think of Me Kindly;" and frankly I can't think of these three angels any other way no matter how hard I try!

The McGuire Sisters never let their fans down; and this CD is the perfect example of just how special their artistry was. I highly recommend this for their fans; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals and timeless love songs will cherish this CD for years to come.
