Christmas Tradition in Poland:
Wigilia is an old Polish tradition to celebrate Christmas Holiday. It is the 12-course meatless Polish feast that is held on Christmas Eve.
The meal begins when the first star comes out. The table is laid with a hay in memory of the Godchild in the manger and a white table clothe. An extra place is set at the table for the unexpected guest or the Holy Spirit. A lighted candle in the windows symbolizes the hope that the Godchild, in the form of a stranger, may come to share the Wigilia. This belief stems from the ancient Polish adage, "A guest in the home is God in the home."
Wigilia starts with everyone in the family room when everyone exchanges Oplatek (special rice wafer blessed by the parish priest) with wishes, kisses, and blessings. Then follows the 12-course meal (one course for each Apostle) and after the meal the members of the family sing Polish Christmas Carols called the Koledy while the children wait impatiently around the Christmas tree or choinka for the gifts to be exchanged. At night everyone go to a midnight church service Pasterka (it is traditionally a midnight Mass for Catholics) to welcome in Christmas, and the birth of the Christ child.

CD Reviews

Most Beautiful Soul Touching Memories of Poland/ Angry at Un

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I would respectfully like to address the review stating that this was "the worst album ever", etc. First of all, I am a VERY proud Polish-American woman who came to the States in 1982; my father a doctor and mother a nurse; wanting to escape the stranglehold of Communism, they decided to escape as Polish refugees first to Austria and then accepted on a waiting list to America, we came here; I was around seven. My father's doctor friend in the old country, who is now director of a major hospital in Wroclaw, was locked up by the Communists during martial law as he was against their regime. So the bottom line is this...the Communists may have taken away Poles' freedom, food, etc. back then, but the people NEVER let them take away their Christian faith and traditions! So this choir and the BEAUTIFUL, tear jerking carols/lyrics is not only lovely but a symbol to all Poles who fought for freedom, and will forever fight for freedom. So I again respectfully disagree with the negative review, and would like to add also that you need to listen to the words, which can move one to tears at times; I admit, you are missing out on this audio experience if you are not fluent in Polish. "Hush Little Jesus", aka "Lulaj Ze Jezuniu", is my favorite since I was 3, and ALWAYS makes me cry. So PLEASE don't listen to any negative reviews, as whomever wrote them obviously is out of touch about the deep meanings behind this choir and the Christmas music it presents. I agree though, DON'T buy the album with 'ornaments', I got the MP3 download! Merry Christmas to all!"

"Bought this for ourselves & also as a gift. If you are Polish or a fan of Polish things, it is a nice gift. A little on the expensive side, though."
