CD Reviews

Good introduction to her work
Sandy | Brussels, Belgium | 08/27/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is a collection of Maurane singles, well balanced between her ballads and her more upbeat, full of energy songs. It covers her early recordings influenced by Jazz, some upbeat and humourous ("Danser", "Toutes les mamas", "Pas gaie la pagaille", "Du mal"), others being ballads showing a more sensitive side and a powerfull voice ("ça casse", "Tout pour un seul homme", "Sur un prélude de Bach" - that one being, for real, based on a classical Bach piece) - or how to teach some of today's young divas that singing does not mean screaming, even if you have the lungs for it. You will also get her collaboration to "Emilie Jolie" children fairy tale ("La chanson de l'autruche"), a very funny song with strong jazz influences. She once was part of the French musical "Starmania" (she sang the bartender) as "Les uns contre les autres" witnesses. The song has become a French classic, but this is one of its best rendition. "Tant c'était bon" is a duet with another belgian singer (Philippe Lafontaine - another guy to be checked out) worth a listen. Between light bossa-nova and jazz, it is a great pop music piece. I would also like to point out "Alfonsina y el mar", a delicate composition in spanish, and "C'est la vie qui décide" an emotional, painfull song about losing the childish illusion you can change the world as you grow up. The title track "L'un pour l'autre" shows the more world music oriented turn she has taken recently on her latest release "Toi du monde". She has a place of her own on the French music scene, take a listen. You will not regret it."
