The music on in small hours is both deeper and more sophisticated than Labarge's previous release, first fall night. Work began on it shortly after first fall night was released in 2002, so it has been five years in the making. in small hours is a concept album that starts with the descent of evening and moves gradually through the night. The conclusion describes the dawn and advent of a clear spring morning, and ends with a love song. in small hours was engineered and co-produced by Grammy Award-winning engineer Corin Nelsen at Will Ackerman's Imaginary Road Studio, and mastered by legendary mastering engineer Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering. Included in this release is a bonus CD. It contains a twelve minute electronic piece with drums titled five midnights, composed and performed by Matthew Labarge.
