"Matt Monro was one of the greatest singers of the '60's. It's fair to say that he only was surpassed by Sinatra, and that happened very rarely. This album focuses on the early years of his career, when his recordings were produced by George Martin. Yes, the same Sir George Martin who produced for The Beatles. A highlight of this disc is a healthy selection of songs by Hoagy Carmichael. Nobody sang Hoagy Carmichael as well as Matt Monro. Bing Crosby said that Matt's "I Get Along Without You" was one of the best records he ever heard, and "Memphis in June" and "Small Fry" are in the same league. Matt was one of the most dreamily romantic singers ever. Just listen to "Portrait of My Love," "Softly, as I Leave You," and "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" to hear a unique voice for romantic repertoire. There also are a few selections from Matt's first album, including the lovely "Jeannie." There are many riches in the Matt Monro discography, but if you want to start somewhere, this CD is an excellent choice."
