"A beautiful debut album from a young trumpet player you will be sure to hear more from. Hilgenberg's lyrical writing (all but two tunes are his) is reminiscent of the compositions of Kenny Wheeler, with a dose of Ellington and even some folk and world music influences. On this album, Hilgenberg surrounds himself with a NYC veteran cast of Frank Kimbrough, piano; Mike Richmond, bass; Adam Nussbaum, drums; and newcomer Jared Hunter, tenor sax. The chemistry works as the band navigates the twists and turns of the often complex tunes with energy and assurance, allowing the soloists to stretch. There is a strong sense of exploration on this album, while its commitment to groove, swing, and melody keeps it firmly rooted in the jazz tradition."
