Debut of a brilliant traditional country singer
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 07/12/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Marsha was good enough to be a major country star. Unfortunately, her brand of country music (ideal for the sixties and seventies) was too traditional for 1990, when this album was released. Produced by the late great Owen Bradley (of Patsy Cline fame), this was her debut album, after which there was just one more album. Since then, she appears to have sunk without trace. The songs here include the oldies Deep water (Bob Wills) and Jealous heart (Kitty Wells) but perhaps the standout here is one of the original songs, A bottle of wine and Patsy Cline. Apart from its quality, this reflective song caused a certain amusement at the time. I remember one radio station asking what other song titles could be made by rhyming drinks with country singers in this way.Marsha had a classic country voice but was clearly not willing to follow the pop-country path to stardom. I note that, as I write this, the only used copy listed has a quoted price higher than one might expect from an obscure singer. This suggests that there are enough people out there who know just how good a singer Marsha was. If you enjoy country music of the sixties and seventies, you will love this album. The playing time is short (half an hour), but the quality makes up for that."
A voice that should be popular today!!!

"Well, I'm now listening to this beautiful, true country singing voice in her debut release!! Just received the CD and can't believe how more pleasant she is on the ears than any present-day, so-called country singers! She needs to return to the studio with an agent that knows the business, and then proceed to kick those other 'new artists' off the CMA stage! I know it's a long-shot and today's voices don't even require to be on-key (or have true tembre/depth of voice), but I pray she returns in some fashion. Another similar country artist, compared with Patsy, that did go further and continues to perform to this-day on the Opry is Mandy Barnett. Again, she didn't make the big-time music scene, but her voice is also a heavenly gift to behold!!!! And, just think if these two ever joined forces for a duet set..........OH MY GOD!!!!! But, we must live with popularity in this music world, and enjoy these great singers in OUR own world!!"
"A Bottle of Wine & Marsha Thornton"

"Excellent (& rare) album of retro-country music produced by the legendary Owen Bradley. The music is very Patsy Cline sounding, but Marsha's voice is reminiscent of a young Connie Smith. The single, "A Bottle Of Wine & Patsy Cline" is a tribute to Patsy & her tunes "Crazy" & "I Fall To Pieces." It's an excellent song! There are 10 songs on the album, & they leave you wanting more once the CD ends. Aside from "A Bottle Of Wine & Patsy Cline", I also like "Deep Water", "Jealous Heart", "Climb The Walls (And Walk The Floor)", & "Don't Tell Me What To Do.""
