CD Reviews

All the essentials
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 10/10/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Marmalade were a wonderful British pop group of the late sixties and early seventies, best remembered in their homeland for Ob-la-di Ob-la-da (the Beatles song), which topped the UK charts around Christmas 1968. Indeed, it was number one in many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. My favorite Marmalade song is Reflections of my life, a top three UK hit that became their only top ten American hit.Their first single, I see the rain, was a hit in Holland but failed to chart in Britain despite some critical acclaim. Their first British hit was Lovin' things, a cover of an American song. However, the British tradition of covering American hits was dying out and subsequent hits were all with original material except for Ob-la-di Ob-la-da.Rainbow, Baby make it soon, Cousin Norman, Radancer, My little one and Wait for me Mary Anne were their other major British hits and all are included here. This is a nice collection of Marmalade music containing all the essentials and a few other tracks. If you enjoy this, there are other Marmalade compilations that provide much more than you will find here."
A nice representative album from the 60s
Adam DeRidder | Austin, TX USA | 08/08/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The Marmalade may not be one of the better-known names of bands from the 60s, but they compare well with the second-tier of bands from the British Invastion - The Kinks, The Animals, The Yardbirds...

This album has solid guitar work, a nice bassline, solid harmony and catchy tunes. Parts of it remind me of The Beatles for their harmony, the Stones for the guitar licks, and strangely, in some places a BJ Thomas ballad.

The mood ranges from melancholy to 60s rockin without venturing into anything too extreme on either end of the spectrum. And I can't find a weak song on the album. Worth buying."
