Marlene Verplanck is the Best
Morris B. Holbrook | NYC | 03/06/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For years, Marlene Verplanck has been working behind the scenes, in semi-obscurity, cranking out one or two magnificent jazz-singing albums a year. Her voice is as pure as fresh-fallen snow. Her instincts for phrasing are impeccable. Her intonation is as true as a tuning fork. She consistently amazes and surprises, as she does throughout this album. The song "All in Fun" is very rare but very worthwhile. The only other version I know is the great one by Jeri Southern, herself a consistent inspiration. If you doubt Marlene's powers, check out "You Must Believe in Spring." This is one of Michel Legrand's triumphs. A near-perfect song sung by a near-perfect stylist.Get it."

"Accompanied by Hank Jones, George Schearing, Marion McPartland and Bucky Pizzarelli, Marlene is in heavy company here. But none of these giants of Jazz outshines Marlene. She is perfection, shear perfection. THE VERY BEST SINGER IN THE WORLD TODAY!!!!Ella left big shoes to fill, Marlene though only 5 feet tall, gets the job done. Hallelujah!Every cut a treasure. Do yourself a favor, buy this album and I envy you the thrill of hearing it for the first time."
A solid pro to show the youngsters how to sing a song.

"This lady knows how to sing almost any type of song, her phrasing and timing are flawless, she isn't going to blast you out of your chair but she has an excellent voice and she knows how to use it.Unlike too many of today's performers she has spent years learning her craft, much doing countess commercials and voiceovers, I first became aware of by her appearances with Alec Wilder on his american popular song series on public radio. To would be singers move over and let real pro show you how its done."
