CD Reviews

I always cheer for the "nice guys"...

"... especially when they're as talented as Mark Wills. I was fortunate enough to see him perform at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center in California in May, 2002. I took a friend of mine along who was unfamilar with Mark. As I have all of Mark's CDs, I made her my own version of "Mark Wills' Greatest Hits" cassette for her to listen two weeks before the concert so she could familarize herself with Mark's songs before we went. He is a great performer as well as great singer. This CD would make a nice "any occasion stocking stuffer" for anyone who doesn't know Mark Wills and his music. I like the CD because it takes his songs cronologically through his hit tunes and albums. Glad to know my favorite song, "Wish You Were Here" is included. As much as I enjoyed Mark's songs, this one sort of "fused me at the hip" with Mark as it started getting radio play at the time I lost a beloved pet. There hasn't been a song out in a long time that has affected emotionally as much as this one did. I still get teary eyed when I listen to it. Don't want to spoil it by telling you about the song. Suffice to say, you should listen to it first if you haven't heard it and judge the impact on your own feelings and emotions. Mark seems to have an innate knack of selecting songs that will take you back to thoughts, feelings, and experiences in our lives as we have grown from being a child to an adult that we can all relate to. His voice is soothing and smooth and has a great range for the ballads (Mark at his best!) and the up beat tempo songs. I sort of liken him to a "younger" George Strait in talent and personality and one of the best new faces and talents in country music today. This is a nice CD for anyone who would like to get to know Mark's past hits. The only thing that surprised me a bit was that there are only 11 songs on the CD. Would have liked to have had two or three more to round it out a little better. I have my own suggestions, but would ask those who think it is too short also to be creative and come up with their own additions to tailor-make your Mark Wills "CD" to your own preferences as you fill in your collection of his CDs. Whoever coined the phrase, "Nice guys finish last," would to amend that old adage after listening to Mark Wills and his songs!"
Good tunes, just lacking in variety

"After four albums of varying quality and success since 1996, Mark Wills and his likeable tenor have put out the inevitable hits collection. It is arranged in chronological order. Thus, after the gently rollicking leadoff track "Jacob's Ladder," we get eight ballads in a row. Aside from the poignant message "Don't Laugh At Me" (Wills' best recording to date), these romantic-oriented odes ("She's In Love," "Back At One," "Wish You Were Here", etc.) - while well made - tend to be similar. It's a shame that the lesser charting yet endearing honkytonker "High, Low, and In Between" and the mid-tempo stomper "Loving Every Minute" weren't added for balance. The final two new tracks, however, do find Wills expanding his musical horizons. "Nineteen Somethin'" - already one of Wills' most successful singles - is a humorous, quick paced spewing of remembrances from the '70s and '80s. "When You Think Of Me" is a power ballad that shows us what Wills is really capable of vocally. Hopefully, Wills will continue to search for new sounds in the future. He's far more than just a romantic balladeer."
