Soul Rage
Battlesick Loner | Australia | 09/22/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is... one of the most sonically beligerent albums you will ever hear, the playing of the brothers Scott harneses great malice and aggression while the 'new' drummer John Stanier(EX-HELMET) gives the album its unrelenting drive and at times a breathtaking sence of urgency. The production on this album is intense, it sounds huge and pummels you from all corners. John Scotts lyrics lack the almost singualar focus of ILL AT EASE but this is hardly a draw back, 'LONE PINE is the anzac epic Scott has always seemed on the verge of delivering, SLEEP rates as one of the finest somebody done somebody wrong songs you will ever hear and the opener FAMILIAR TERRITORY is the most crushing opening to an album imaginable. The album closer CUT EM DOWN shows how exhilerating this band can be, Staniers drumming is jawdropping. Every song on this album is a standout,The brilliance of RETALIATE, LET CHAOS RULE SUPREME and TOKEN all attest to the limpness of the heavy music scene at the moment. Crafted with mathmatical precision and infused with a gut full of rage this is the most aggresive sounding TMOC album yet. As John Scott said himself there is a wide spectrum of emotions on this album, except happiness. The lyrics on this album conjure up dramatic images of the existentiallist lost in a chaotic world, instead of being overwhelmed his only response is rage at all he sees and the weakness and mediocrity that has consumed his world. It's been 3 years that I have carried this album with me and everything I loved about it the first time I heard it still holds true now. One of the most vital and standout metal albums of the new millenium."
