Elixir to keep you young: lullabies for grown-ups
S J Flos | The netherlands | 04/06/2000

"If there has ever been an album that has grown on me, it's this album of Mark Murphy. I have been a dedicated follower of his art and skills for many years and have many of his albums, but this one has it all. It gives that special relaxing feeling, to make you smile and to make you realise that life isn't all that bad after all.Lullabies for grown-ups.The first song gets you in the mood right away and after you've closed your eyes, the very marvel IF apeares on the horizon. This well known song is so beautifully covered I just NEED to listen to it once in a while. Other songs also have the effect of complete surrender, especially THERE IS NO REASON WHY and NOT LIKE THIS.To balance all this beauty the definition of an UGLY WOMAN is spelled out in just over 5 minutes.I can recommend this album to anyone who is prepared to let music grow on you and become a part of your life's special moments. I only have a handfull of these records and this is my NR 1. A Record that keeps me young!"
You may close your eyes but please keep your ears turned on

"Don't get fooled. Mark Murphy has recorded "If", the very popular song by Bread. Listen to it. He has completely changed harmony. What a splendid re-creation. Inspired singing and precise background is also part of the game. One of the best Murphy's."
Let love overflow

"As a jazz singer, i always keep in mind rule number 1: "never listen to jazz singers and imitate them." True. But, this man, and this record, are way beyond. And i couldn't help listening to, and being influenced by, this record.

Murphy's vocals can be smooth, delicate, yet straight in your face. Every note in this work are just more than perfect. From the down-tempo swing of "Miss you mr. Mercer", to the fun of "Ugly Woman", to the splendid rendition of "If", These songs are the ideal soundtrack for every moment. If i had to pick up a record i couldn't live without, this would be the one. Listen to "Not like this". This song had a whole new meaning to me when i first heard him sing it. It's love flooding all over, tears of grief and joy.

One of the greatest vocal performances ever."
