Engaging Jazz
Miranda Murray | Port Macquarie NSW Australia | 05/15/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Closer is a sophisticated, seductive musical experience which leaves you feeling warm and enriched. It's the sort of jazz which engages all the faculties - the sweep of ideas nourishes the intellect, while the ambience of each track engages you on a profound emotional level.
The overall effect of Closer is one of brooding intensity, but that's not to imply a sameness about the tracks, for the album contains many light and playful sequences, subtleties and sweeping variations in tone and texture. What is most striking is the way in which each note is offered up as crucial in itself: defined, precise, elegant. It becomes clear that the composer, Mark Isaacs, has an extraordinarily sophisticated classical ear and that he brings to jazz a sense of the richness and scope of centuries of collective musical experience. In other words, there is nothing shallow or limiting or tired about the sound. The music is now, it's contemporary, it's fearless but it speaks with the knowledge and weight of serious tradition.
The haunting saxophone work throughout the album is nothing short of enthralling. All you need for a memorable night's entertainment is a glass of red (or whatever) and a surrendering of the spirit to such tracks as Aussie Angels, Josephine - listen for the vocals here - or Closer (my 3 particular favourites). Listen, too, for the restraint and precision of the piano: the amazing potential of this instrument is showcased in every context on the album. Here is an hour of music which rewards you with repeated playing, for, because of its depth and complexity and beauty, each listening experience is a fresh and new one.
Anyway, if you want gourmet food for your brain, if you're looking for atmosphere and are open to cutting-edge musical ideas, or if you just crave enjoyment, then I recommend you make the small investment it takes to acquire this CD."
