CD Reviews

One of comedy's best-kept secrets
M. Freeman | Kodiak, AK United States | 03/15/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Mark Graham is a one-of-a-kind genre-mixing comedic genius.

He is a country-western Tom Lehrer. Who else could re-write a Greek myth as a western ballad ("Oedipus Rex")?

Graham's wacky, intelligent songs cover everything from science ("Food Chain") to philosophy ("Monkey with a Typewriter") to social commentary ("Life is Hard When You're Dumb")to religion ("Neighbor of the Beast"). Even "Big Tongue" has something to say, although I am not sure what.

Graham is fairly irreverant towards religion, so if you're liable to be offended by his mocking take on the Christian faith, you may want to skip over "No Democracy in Heaven" and "Neighbor of the Beast."

I don't find all tracks to be of equal value on this album, but there are enough gems for me to urge you to buy it if you can find it!

Graham has other releases that are even harder to come by. Elsewhere he did "Moby Dick" as a bluegrass ballad--just as clever and hilarious as "Oedipus Rex." Others have done covers of his ghostly "High and Lonesome." They're worth tracking down.
