CD Reviews

A fun-filled wonderful musical collection!

"When one thinks of mariachis, what comes to mind is the large sombreros, traditional uniforms, and blaring trumpets. But in the very early days of the mariachi, the trumpets were not an instrument in the band. The trumpet became a part of the band in the fifties.

Mariachi music doesn't have to be only instrumental, and a treat is to include vocals. Here, the vocals vary with rich deep sound to accentuate the instruments.

A variety of traditional rancheras, polkas, and ballads are included, and some of the classics that are forever associated with mariachi bands.

Probably one of the most popular mariachi mubers has got to be "Guadalajara." That song is always symbolic of festivity and liveliness. And listen to the lone strings on "Cielito Lindo" probably the most popular Mexican song ever. If Lucy Ricardo knew it, everyone then knew it.

Another well-known song is the Mexican hat dance "Jarabe Tapatio". You can't help picture those dancers sashaying in their flared costumes. In the tune "El Mariachi", the background sound of the members exude a sound of reverberation.

Although there are more distinct versions of "La Marcha De Zacatecas" one can always appreciate this uplifting, traditional wedding march song.

This is an excellent collection with great true sound! When I say true sound, I mean it is not remixed. This is sharp, crisp and with an even sound!.....MzRizz

A great buy!

"Twenty selections for a low price, but that's not all. There is a trace of an echo in some of these "exitos" that make you feel as though you are there in the public square or ballroom in Old Mexico. The pace of some selections is not as fast and frantic as some (Norte) Americanized versions of mariachi. This traditional mariachi is very satisfying. I am addicted to mariachi and could listen to it indefinitely without growing weary of it. If you're like me, you will enjoy Silvestre Vargas and his band."
