CD Reviews

Stunning!

"Maria Rita is fantastic! She brings the authentic Brazilian music back from the ashes. Her strong presence, wonderful voice, and the most voluptuous Brazilian swing are a combination really hard to find. Add to that a strong band and a carefully chosen repertoire and you have a piece of art better than most stuff coming from Brazil during the past two decades. In spite of having a higher tonal range, her voice brings an eerie resemblance with that of her mother. So much, that sometimes it makes you think that Elis came down from heaven. Don?t get fouled, you are indeed listening to the great Maria Rita, and notwithstanding the similarities, she has a talent of her own. The CD gains momentum at each passing song. By ?Encontros e Despedidas? I was in a crazy emotional mode; it was so refreshing and surprising that I would feel something new for a song that I?ve heard ad-nauseum on the voice of Milton Nascimento. ?A Lavadeira do Rio? is an awesome Bai?o by Lenine that brings me to mind the likes of Alceu Valenca, but with an atypical arrangement that includes cuica and berimbau. I could listen to that song a hundred times in row. Thanks Maria Rita for your ?lindo? CD! I would love to see your show coming to San Francisco! Come soon! Please?"
A New Star Is Born!

"Anyone who loves Brazilian music knows that Elis Regina was one of its greatest performers. Her sudden death, some twenty years ago, left an entire country in mourning. So imagine my surprise when I found out that not only did she have a daughter, but that she - Maria Rita - had a voice that is spookingly similar to her mom's! It's like Elis was born again, promising to delight us with many years of fine, new music! Even though Maria Rita never mentions her mom on the CD booklet, she pays homage to her with a similiar voice, singing style and even repertoire, which in this case includes fine songs by Milton Nascimento and Rita Lee. This CD is a must for any Elis fan, any Brazilian music fan and any music fan overall!"
Simplesmente Fantastico...

"As a previous review just mentioned, this is a bit like if a part of Elis was reborn again.
Maria Rita has a good choice of songs and she performs them both sweetly and powerfully (yes, it's possible). The only thing I might regret about this CD is that I do not feel it really takes advantage of the young woman's vocal range. I have heard Maria Rita's participation in other CDs and she has an amazing voice in the higher notes, that she doesn't use much in this CD.
Anyway, if you loved Elis, adopt Maria Rita... simplesmente fantastica."
