CD Reviews

We let the music speak...it is surprisingly impressive
ALEK LAUREANO | 03/06/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"After thirteen years as one of the voices of Juan Luis Guerra's 440 group, Marco Hernandez finally got his own project. Actually, this record was supposed to be recorded with Roger Zayas-Bazan, the other male voice of 440, and the group was to be called Espacio Pagado. It never happened, as Zayas-Bazan elected to stay alongside Guerra, so Hernandez got help instead from Hector Anibal Estrella, former lead voice of Dominican rock groups Transfusion and PumChau Cha, and the son of 440's female voice Adalgisa Pantaleon (as you can see the connection with 440 never disappear). The album itself is a delightful surprise. Make no mistake, we all knew the talent of Marco, he always had his share of musical input in all of 440 records, but this kind of consistent, well put and funny job in his first record it's still a surprise. Que hable la musica is a perfect example of what really is Tropical or Caribbean Pop, not the jokes recorded by clowns like Enrique Iglesias. The songs lyrics are not in Guerra's class (how many are, anyway) but the music and the sound is the best part of this impressive mixed album, wich consists of six merengues, three bachatas and a ballad. The merengues are, of course, the core of the record. Future hit track Soy un Sabordin opens, not really a merengue in itself but a great tropical pop song, very good music and contagious rythm and chorus. Other equally solid songs are El Men, Por el Amor de esa Mujer and El Aguajero Raquitico, the last two performed by Hector Anibal. Two of these should be hits (El Men and Por el amor de esa mujer are our favorites). Morenita Linda and Por aqui Paso, the other two merengues, are solid, but not impressive.Moving to the bachata field are Lloro, Reconciliacion and Luna de Miel. In the first two, Hernandez used a more typical, Dominican urban bachata, musical patterns with good results. The best one, however, is Luna de Miel, performed by Hector. This one could also be a hit, is well performed by Hector, with a nice melody and the usual sweet lyrics. All in all this is a very impressive album, with very bright colors in the music and the eternal present influence of the 440 school. It was very good that Hernandez chose Hector Anibal to be the other voice, Hector is the prototypical lead singer, just listen to the album and you'll find out. Four out of five stars would be the judicious rating, but we must confess our bias toward anything that has a connection to 440, so five stars it's our rating. We bought the record six days ago, and just can't stop listening to it.Great job Marco, we let the music speak to us, and the music definitely did it."
"QUE HABLE LA MUSICA"...EXCELENTE PRODUCCION
ALEK LAUREANO | New Berlin, Wisconsin - USA | 12/30/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

What a Great Album!
