CD Reviews

The one and only

"Still my favorite MO album. The live 'Dream' is just matchless in the annals of fusion.

Years back -- early 2000-ish -- there was talk from CBS/Columbia that the whole concert would be released on CD. Obviously we're still waiting....

In the meantime, MO heads might be interested to know that there's a slew of MO concerts from this same era, recorded live, available (legally) for listening on the 'Wolfgang's Vault' site. I think some are even downloadable.

Electricity in the Air
Mr. Richard D. Coreno | Berea, Ohio USA | 03/25/2009

"Though it may not have been apparent to fans, the band was fraying at the edges due to personality conflicts, with John McLaughlin soon enlisting a new lineup that brought amazing orchestral textures to the music.

Recorded live from the Scaefer Music Festival on August 17-18, 1973, in Central Park, the Jan Hammer composition, Sister Andrea, is sandwiched between a pair from McLaughlin, Trilogy: Sunlit Path, Le Mere de la Mer and Dream.

Bassist Rick Laird and drummer Billy Cobham successfully tackle the task of keeping the powerful rhythms in high gear, with the flair of violinist Jerry Goodman emerging strongly from the mix. But make no mistake, it is a fast-paced duel between McLaughlin (g) and Hammer (k) that brings a sonic appeal to each number.

Until the release of The Lost Trident Sessions, these selections - being slated for a third studio album for the lineup that was abandoned - this was the only clues on the future direction for the band. At least in the studio, it was potential that was not reached."
Great to have in Mahavishnu Collection

"So far not really happy with the sound quality. However the arrangements are interesting and as with all early Mahavishnu, "one must take sips from the cup to develop a taste before one can gulp it down"."
