Bank Shots New Maelström CD a "Percussion Fusion" The Maelström Percussion Ensemble?s recently released "Bank Shots" CD builds upon the rich history and diverse expertise of this innovative ensemble. Formed in 1982, Maelström has taken in many of the currents in percussion performance. From the standard repertoire ? John Cage, Lou Harrison, James Tenney, Steve Reich, and works by Frank Zappa, King Crimson, and contemporary composers ? to world music, jazz, and electronic soundscapes, Maelström has cut a wide path through the world of percussion and contemporary progressive music. "Bank Shots" doesn?t come down squarely in any one camp. The compositions, all by ensemble members, present plenty of opportunities for "ensemble chops" with intricate composed material and shifting, angular metric devices. But there is also a great focus on melodic and rhythmic improvisation and a supreme emphasis on "groove". It?s rock meets jazz meets world meets new music ? taking the "percussion ensemble" concept a giant step forward.
