CD Reviews

Sebadoh goes to Bali
The Lunar Staff | 01/25/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is a real find; an intriguing and original album featuring some unconventional instrumentation and percussion (eg. hammer dulcimer & vibraphone, something called a "fun-box"). The sound is hard to pin down but if you had to make comparisons, it might help to think of what Sebadoh or the Sea & Cake would sound like if they took an inspirational trip to Bali and added a good dose of Yo-La Tengo-ish organ. The second (bonus) disk was a one-time-only listen for me unless I need some far-eastern mood-music to go with a Thai dinner. It's all field recorded eastern music by native artists, very un-pop (to my North-American ears). If you're a fan of the aforementioned bands, this album will surely tickle your fancy. Well done."
The future of Rock 'n' Roll is here
The Lunar Staff | 04/08/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Tortoise-like..ok, Sebadoh, yeah, allright -- but really what we have here is a band that has melded their own particular musical orientation (Balinese instrumentation)with the best of The Ramones, New Order, even some elements of early Pink Floyd. The "trance-rock" label has been applied - and it may be apt at this point, but having seen this band perform live 3 or 4 times here in Athens, I think labels will be sloughed off as soon as the next record is released. This band is a dynamic and exploratory experience in the future of rock music - which is embodied only by those bands who transcend pre-existing traditional forms. Macha is making new art -- a refreshing and all too rare occurence in today's consumerist-driven popscene."
