Once upon a time (the 14th century, actually), there was a monk whose name we'll never know. He probably lived in Salzburg, and among his other duties he wrote songs, becoming one of the most well-known lyricists of the Middle Ages. The diversity and originality of his compositions shows in everything from love songs to bawdy drinking songs, and each one reveals a personality that's effectively captured by the excellent singers and instrumentalists of the Augsburg Early Music Ensemble. As we listen to these songs, we feel as if we're in the presence of an articulate and charming folk singer, who tells his stories as if he had lived them himself. --David Vernier
