CD Reviews

Great Quintet Recording
Brent Flinchbaugh | Pennsylvania USA | 10/10/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Lyric Brass Quintet's debut recording, "Daydreams, Desires & Diversions" is the epitome of brass musicianship at its best. Combining classical, 20th century, and popular music, this cd is an acclectic look at some of the best brass quintet music ever written. Ewazen's "Colchester Fantasy" is a wonderfully written and performed piece. This selection displays a wide range of technical and musical proficientcy from the LBQ. Following "Colchester Fantasy" are three new works by Peabody faculty member Elam Ray Sprenkle. These three pieces are extremely interesting to the listener as well as the musican performing the piece. "Diversions on a Repeated Sequence," based on a strand of DNA, creates a new approach to the rhythmic diversity needed in a top-noch brass quintet. Stan Wilkerson's arrangement of Johnson's jazz ballad "Lament" is a highlight of the recording. Stan's artistry is obvious through the improvisational sections of this piece. From the technical demands of Ewazen to the mature musicality displayed in Lament, "Daydreams, Desires & Diversions" is a must have for the brass enthusiast."
Student of Mr. Spang (tuba) Review

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The tuba player in this quintet is my band teacher at Lime Kiln Middle School. He is a great guy, and even produced an audio CD of the LKMS Band. I can tell at concerts, that Mr. Spang and the other members of the quintet enjoy the work they do together. This CD is an inspiration to anyone learning to play an instument. It has a beautiful brass sound through all the tracks. The Lyric Brass Quintet's debut CD Daydreams, Desires, and Diversions is inspirational, yet relaxing and I highly recommend it to anyone."
