CD Reviews

Fun to listen to
J. Joyce Keyes | Fond du Lac, WI USA | 03/11/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am a big fan of this band, so my "Neutral" postition might not be so neutral, bear with me. Everything about this band is fun and once you listen to the cuts (Seventeen Cents is my favorite)you might get the urge to join it as they seem to be having too much fun for just four people. The thing about this group is that they are a band and they compliment each other well. The arrangements are original and appealling. You'll love it."
Quality bluegrass from Lynn and her band
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 09/25/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Lynn has never attracted a significant audience beyond bluegrass music but seems content to ply her trade as a major singer within the bluegrass community - and why not? While Alison Krauss and others broaden the appeal of bluegrass music, Lynn continues to please her established fans while picking up some new ones as interest in bluegrass music spreads.

This album is typical of her music, with a mix of original songs, carefully selected covers and an instrumental (Twister). As ever, Lynn does most of the singing but Marshall Wilborn (Lynn's husband) gets a chance to sing lead occasionally. He sings Destination love, Thy burdens are greater than mine and Seventeen cents. He also duets with Lynn on If teardrops were pennies. On this album, the music is generally upbeat, though there are exceptions such as If teardrops were pennies.

The covers include The likes of you (George Jones), You'll never be the sun (Dolores Keane - Lynn discovered the song on a visit to Ireland), Destination love (Wynonie Harris), If teardrops were pennies (as Lynn points out in the liner notes, she's heard several versions of this song, but mostly she's heard the Porter and Dolly version), Scraps from your table (Hazel Dickens), Thy burdens are greater than mine (Pee Wee King) and Wrong road again (Crystal Gayle - but Lynn was inspired to record it after hearing Joe Val's cover).

Three of the remaining songs (Love beyond, Long train of fools, Seventeen cents) were written by friends of Lynn and the band, though I don't know if Lynn was the first to record these songs. I certainly haven't heard any other versions. Nor have I heard The river elsewhere, though I've heard other songs with the same title. So these four songs, together with the instrumental track, Twister, may all be originals.

If you enjoy bluegrass music, you will surely love this album."
Toe-tapping, head-bobbing bluegrass.

"I was so happy to find this artist. I never thought I would like another artist the way I love Alison Krauss. Thankfully I was wrong. Ms. Morris coaxes you from one emotion to another with her vocal intonation and emphasis. Her band is great (as good as Union Station). This CD is reminiscent of Krauss's best work (which I believe is her "Every Time You Say Good-Bye album. If you like bluegrass or Alison Krauss, you will love this album."
