CD Reviews

Experimental psychosexual cinema for the ears
Robert Kainer | houston, tx | 11/14/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Luc Ferrari takes a cinematic rather than traditionally musical approach to structuring sound compositions, his pieces playing like experimental films for the ear (one of his most notorious musique concrete pieces, entitled "presque rien", literally "almost nothing", is little more than a verite recording of a morning on the beach, rather like Warhol's reknowned static films). "Place des Abbesses" is very much in this vein, its episodic procession giving the feeling of slow dissolves from scene to scene, with a kind of fellini-esque playfully erotic undercurrent. "Cellule 75" is a repetitive process piece drawing on the minimalist language of Reich and Riley, starting out harmonious but gradually becoming more aggressive and european-dissonant - it may appeal to fans of the german band Can's more metronomic pieces."
