CD Reviews

Great, but be sure to buy the 2005 version.

"Having only recently heard of LOVE or the album Forever Changes, I was a bit skeptical that a 58 year old Lee could pull this off, a track-for-track recreation of the original album. I was very pleasantly surprised. Although Lee's voice is far harsher than it was in 67, I would argue his voice now is better suited to the album; the vocals on the original are too polished. Baby Lemonade and The Stockholm Strings 'n' Horns (who would later tour with Brian Wilson) are fantastic and faithful, exactly what you'd want from such a project. I've watched this DVD three times since receiving it three days ago; it's that good. It's so good that I want to get the CD of the Forever Changes Concert so I can have this recording on my Zune.

My only caveat emptor would be to recommend getting the 2005 version of the DVD instead of the 2003 version. The 2005 version is anamorphic, meaning that it's formatted to fit widescreen TVs. The 2003 version is what I call "fake widescreen", which means that on a widescreen TV, the picture is "windowboxed" with a black border on all four sides."

"I wasn't sure about this one. I mean, would you really want the Beatles (if they were all alive) to get together 35 years after "Sgt. Pepper" and say "it's time to play Pepper in concert from beginning to end"....didn't think so. It would be embarrassing. After all of the years of turmoil, personnel changes, drugs, jail time, etc., Arthur Lee decides to film a concert of himself and Baby Lemonade playing, of all things, his greatest album from the first song to the last. A virtual note for note recreation of "Forever Changes"!!!!! How could anything even come close to the original 1967 masterpiece. It would be virtually impossible. Amazingly, Arthur and B.L. pull it off perfectly. Arthur has always been a great songwriter, guitarist, arranger and composer. But my favorite talent that he possesses is that otherworldly voice. One of the greatest rock singers of all time, he could sound like a choir singer in a church ("Andmoreagain") and then shout out a number like "Little Red Book" or "7 and 7 is". No one that I've ever heard has that kind of range. His vocals are awesome on this DVD. The 5.1 mix is excellent. The crowd is shown a few times. The camera angles are everywhere that they should be for each part of the songs (name even 1 or 2 music DVD's that can boast that). Baby Lemonade is such a tight band and they obviously love Arthur's music and enjoy playing it. I own a ton of music DVD's and this one is easily my favorite. Every time you play it you will hear something different that you didn't hear before. Just like the original LP. To say that this project is mesmerizing and complex would be a major understatement. The lyrics are so dark (Arthur thought the world was on the brink of self-destruction when he wrote them) and yet the music is so joyous and beautiful. It's such a wonderful final statement before he sadly died. If you are a Love fan then you already own this DVD. Any fan of any type of music should own a copy of the Forever Changes Concert. It was/is a monumental achievement. The extra songs for the encore include "7 and 7" and "Orange Skies"!!!!! Easter egg is "Singing Cowboy". Interviews with Arthur and Baby Lemonade. This is a must have. Buy it and wear it out. You won't believe the versions of "Daily Planet", "Maybe If The People.....", "The Good Humor Man" and the climatic and epic "You Set the Scene". If all music DVD's could only be half this good......"
