CD Reviews

Classic Love Dogs
Kevin J. Shenefield | Walla Walla, Wa USA | 10/10/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Get ready to howl! This high energy, seven piece band from Boston is a whole new breed of jump blues that will have you foaming at the mouth. Their repertoire is about 50% original material ... songs with great grooves, clever lyrics, and lots of personality. The remaining 50% are R&B covers from the 40's, 50's, & 60's by the greats - RayCharles, Louis Prima, Wynonie Harris, and Irma Thomas to name a few. They look sharp, dress cool, and play tight arrangements ... but most of all they get their audience involved. The music they play is up, positive stuff that lets people forget their troubles for awhile and boogie. The energy and pure good feeling of their show appeals to a much broader audience than most blues-based acts. In 1996, the Love Dogs released this debut CD, "I'm Yo Dog" on Tone-Cool Records (a division of Rounder Records) and reviews have been extremely positive! In fact, that same year the album received the coveted 'Bad Dog Album Of The Year' award. Their original song, "Big and Hot", has been a radio and dance club hit all across the country. But that is not by far the only good song on the album. This disc is crammed with standout tunes from start to finish. I personally can say that there is not one song on the album that I don't like a lot. It is extremely smooth and cool and way too much fun."
Big and Hot

"This song, this CD and this band are all big and hot. And so much more. Their live performances are full of the raw energy and loosely veiled sexuality that makes swing so wonderful. Recorded music almost never has the same impact as live but this one comes pretty close. It's probably even better if you have seen the Love Dogs perform."

"I have been following The Love Dogs for some time now. Each time I see them they are better than the last. The lead singer is multi-talented; he sang and played the drums last night for 3 solid hours. Now they have four saxophones and sound great! They're a terrific show band and everyone in the place gets up to dance the moment they come on stage. Energizing - fun - talented & going places. Their new CD will be out in October 2000! Can't wait!"
