CD Reviews

Nice Patriotic Theme, but the Songs are NOT Very Catchy, and

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I like the Louvin Brothers for their Christian music, though they also dabbled in secular, not strictly religious songs. This album is of a patriotic theme, and their hearts are in the right place, but the songs and lyrics are, overall, not as catchy or intense as their best Christian music. I am a bit disappointed by the lack of memorable tunes and song hooks, but I respect them very much for what they attempted to do here, to make a very patriotic CD focused on the American Soldier!

This is put out on the "Gusto" record label, which is an off-shoot of EMI, it appears to be, at least, according to the CD cover information. The CD liner notes are sparse and lacking in important details, namely, they do not specifically name the writers of each song! But they do mention a few of the songs written by the Louvin Brothers, THE WEAPON OF PRAYER, THE GREAT ATOMIC POWER, and ROBE OF WHITE. Roy Acuff wrote SEARCHING FOR A SOLDIER'S GRAVE, and Ernest Tubbs wrote A SOLDIER'S LAST LETTER. No other songs have the writer listed or mentioned!?

The back cover of the CD reprints a long paragraph describing the album, which originally appeared on the initial album release decades ago, in 1962.

The Louvins are great at intriguing, SUPER INTENSE Bible references, in their Christian song lyrics. I think the title WEAPON OF PRAYER is so intense that it is worth buying this CD just to have that in my CD library! I probably won't listen to this entire CD a lot, but there are definitely a few songs that I will compile onto my own 'best of" the Louvin Brothers, pulled from their CDs that I do own.

When the Louvins are at their best, they are doing extremely conservative Bible-based lyrics, innocently sang in a gentle vocal harmony, with acoustic guitar strumming for accompany. Their best CD is SATAN IS REAL, and I highly recommend that over this CD, and over most any other Christian CD of guitar strumming harmonies and conservative Bible values! Rock on! Jesus is the Rock!"
