The fourth master baritone
Carlos James Woodward | São Paulo, Brazil | 07/31/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Titta Ruffo, Riccardo Stracciari, Leonard Warren and Louis Quilico, are the four great baritones of the 20th century, a century that, as far as Italian/French opera goes, boasted the names of Bruson and Zancanaro to the very end.
But listen to Quilico in this album, see him on DVD (the Met's Don Carlo, for instance) and you will understand that to be one of the very greatest it is not enough to be very good at what you do, you have to set milestones, new standards to be matched by whoever comes after.
Stracciari, for instance, was the first baritone who's voice was audible throughout the Quartet in Rigoletto, on stage or disk (you may buy a memorable recording here at Amazon, with Borgioli and Capsir). Warren was the greatest opera singer of the century, among baritones, tenors or whatever.
Get this Quilico album and find out the reason he was able to set a record of 25 straight seasons at the Met...Carlos Woodward, 72, a Brazilian classic music reviewer."
