Synopsis

Album Description
An unusual blend of rock, electronic, and hip-hop flavors, Lotus Dog offers a rich sonic landscape of driving guitars, drums and electronics punctuated by liquidy down-tempo grooves and beautiful, accessible melodies. The center of Lotus Dog is the brother and sister team of producer TSO and vocalist Jolie. Vocals range from all-out power to the sweetest filigree. There?s an ether here, too, varying in mood from driven and energetic to melancholy and haunting. The lyrics are the heart of Lotus Dog, inspiring philosophical contemplation of the world and our place in it. In a world where cynicism is king, Lotus Dog celebrates our better nature, without compromise. The Lotus Dog doesn?t preach, just sings about our inward journey, the part of life we all have in common. These are daring themes in a music industry where fashion, attitude and consumerism are predominant forces. A veteran of New York?s hard rock club scene, Jolie sings with a rare blend of raw power, emotion and intelligence. She sings from the heart and it comes across. TSO?s production is both sophisticated and subtle. His signature alien ear-candy atmospheres and hip-hop beats definitely pervade, while a tribe of more than a dozen guest musicians, including Oakland rappers The Conscious Daughters and Afghan vocalist Tameem give the work a mature, expansive worldliness. Jolie and TSO build their rock-tronic experience on a foundation of classic influences, solid performances and engaging production. Their frames of reference range from pioneer musical styling such as that of Pink Floyd, Moby, and No Doubt to the heartfelt power of Joni, Janis and Aretha. Lotus Dog has that rare mixture of sound and vision that cuts through hype and apathy, coming at the listener from bright new angles. It's sweet, but don't be fooled: this dog has teeth!

"Not only is this the most amazing CD I've heard in a long time, but I am so down with their beautiful message that I was happy to spend my money on them. This CD moves from folk to rock to rap to world beat to heaven in a heartbeat. Jolie's haunting and heartfelt voice brings conviction and a rocker's edge to lyrics so real that you find yourself hitting search to back up and hear them again. But she's not a screamer; she's a dreamer.
It's a deep CD. It's got a message. That's pretty refreshing in a world where everybody's just singing about booty. Even better, the message doesn't hit you like a hammer -- it sorta drifts into your soul.
There are no song samples on Amazon, so go to www.lotusdog.net to listen. "Shadow" is an incredibly powerful ballad (you can hear the pain in her voice), while "Breathe" is an R&B/rap-inflected cosmic meditation on love and unity. Check out "Centuries" for rock/rap with a killer groove, or "Mirror" for all-out rock. All the music is tight and the words give me chills."
